Equipment

  • Slow Cooker
  • Medium Skillet
  • Measuring Cups and Spoons
  • Wooden Spatula

Ingredients

  • 2 lbs Ground Turkey
  • 2 tablespoons Oil
  • 1 medium Onion diced
  • 4 Garlic Cloves minced
  • 2 medium Sweet Potatoes peeled and chopped
  • 2 15 ounce cans Kidney Beans
  • 28 ounces Crushed Tomatoes
  • 3 tablespoons Light Brown Sugar
  • 2 teaspoons Cumin
  • 2 teaspoons Chili Powder divided

Instructions

  • Heat 1 tablespoon of oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat and add the ground turkey. Use a wooden spatula to break it apart as it browns. When there is no pink left transfer the turkey to the crockpot.
  • Using the same skillet heat the remaining 1 tablespoon of oil and add the onions. Sauté until they become fragrant and translucent, about 2 to 3 minutes. Add the garlic and continue to cook for 1 more minute. Transfer to the crockpot.
  • Add the remaining ingredients to the crockpot and stir them together.
  • Set the crockpot to LOW and cook for 4 hours or HIGH and cook it for 2 hours, you can occasionally stir the chili (optional). The sweet potatoes should be soft and tender when done.

Notes

  • To keep your meat from drying out when you brown it add a little baking soda. Mix 1/2 teaspoon of baking soda with 1 tablespoon of water and add it to the meat before you cook it. This raises the PH levels, which stops the proteins from binding too quickly and thus drying out.
  • The longer you cook this chili the better it will taste, which is why it works best in the crockpot. While it cooks the flavors build together and soak into all the ingredients.
  • For a thicker chili use, sweet potato puree in the can instead of fresh sweet potato.

Alternate Cooking Methods

Stovetop Method:

  • Brown the meat as instructed and sauté the onions and garlic. Add both to a large Dutch oven.
  • Add all the remaining ingredients and stir to combine. Bring the mixture to a soft boil over medium heat and then simmer, uncovered, for 45 minutes, until the potatoes have softened.

Instant Pot Instructions:

  • Set the Instant Pot to SAUTÉ and add 1 tablespoon of oil. Add the ground turkey and use a wooden spatula to break it apart as it browns. Once there is no longer any pink use a slotted spoon to remove the meat and set it aside.
  • Add the remaining 1 tablespoon of oil and the diced onions. Sauté the onions for 2 to 3 minutes, until translucent. Place the garlic in the Instant Pot and continue to sauté for an additional minute.
  • Return the turkey to the Instant Pot and add all the remaining ingredients. Give the ingredients a good stir.
  • Place the lid on top and set the vent to "sealing." Press MANUAL and set the time to 12 minutes. Allow the steam to release naturally for 10 minutes before removing the lid.
