Raspberry Simple Syrup

Perfect for drinks and cocktails this Raspberry Simple Syrup is made using fresh raspberries and is done in under 10 minutes. It's also delicious drizzled on pancakes or cakes and even goes well with coffee.

Ingredients

  • 1 cup Sugar
  • 1/2 cup Water
  • 1/2 cup Raspberries fresh or frozen

Instructions

  • Dissolve the sugar. Place the sugar and water into a small saucepan set over medium heat. Allow the sugar to dissolve, stirring it occasionally for about 1 minute.
  • Add the raspberries. Add the raspberries to the sugar water and keep the heat at medium letting it simmer for 5 minutes.
  • Strain the syrup. Pour the mixture through a fine mesh sieve to remove the raspberry sediment. Don't press the raspberries into the sieve though because it will result in a cloudy syrup. Discard the sediment.

Notes

  • Sort through the berries before adding them to the recipe. Raspberries mold easily so when you go to wash them and before adding them to the mixture sort through them. Raspberries just past their fresh date are also perfect for this recipe since they're starting to break down already.
  • When straining the syrup don't mash the raspberries. If you mash the raspberries into the mesh sieve it will cause the syrup to have a cloudy appearance.
  • If you're a Starbucks fan then try the Pink Drink using this raspberry simple syrup.
  • To maintain color and freshness add lemon juice. If you plan on making a large batch or just want to keep it on hand add 1 teaspoon of fresh lemon juice to keep it fresh longer and maintain the bright red color.
  • Chang up the flavor. Try adding some herbs such as rosemary to the simmering mixture for additional flavor variations.
