- 5 tablespoons Unsalted Butter
- 2 cloves Garlic minced
- 2 tablespoons Fresh Basil chopped
- 2 tablespoons Fresh Cilantro chopped
- pinch Black Pepper
- 8 slices Sourdough Bread
- 1 cup Gouda shredded
- 1 cup Monterey Jack Cheese shredded
- 4 slices Proscuitto
- 2 tablespoons Olive Oil
- Honey for drizzling (optional)
Prepare the herb butter. Add the room-temperature butter, garlic, basil, cilantro, and pepper to a medium bowl and mash the ingredients together until evenly combined.
Prepare the sandwiches. Spread both sides of the bread with the herb butter. Shred both kinds of cheese using a grater and sprinkle on one side of the bread. Layer on a slice of prosciutto and top with the other piece of bread.
Cook the sandwiches. Heat 1 to 2 tablespoons of oil or butter in a large skillet over medium heat. Place the sandwiches in the skillet and cook until it turns golden brown. Flip the sandwich to the other side and cover the skillet with a lid to contain the heat as well as melt the cheese.
Finishing touch. Drizzle each sandwich with some honey for a little added sweetness that finishes the sandwiches perfectly.
- Choose your cheese. While Gouda and Monterey Jack are recommended, you can get creative with cheese choices. Experiment with other melting cheeses like cheddar, mozzarella, or fontina, depending on your preferences.
- Distribute the cheese evenly. Even Cheese Distribution: Make sure to distribute the cheese evenly over the bread to ensure every bite has a perfect blend of melted cheese and garlic-infused goodness.
- Use a lid for faster melting. If the cheese is taking too long to melt, cover the skillet with a lid or a heat-safe plate to create a warm, enclosed space that encourages faster melting.
- Press the sandwich. If you want a more compact and evenly melted grilled cheese, consider using a spatula to gently press down on the sandwich while cooking.
- Use moderate heat. Cooking the grilled cheese over medium-low heat is essential to avoid burning the bread and allow the cheese to melt evenly.
- Don't overstuff. Avoid overstuffing the sandwich with cheese and fillings, as it may make it difficult for the cheese to melt thoroughly.
