- 1 750 ml bottle Dry Red Wine
- 1/4 cup Brandy
- 1 Orange sliced
- 8 Whole Cloves
- 2 Cinnamo Sticks plus more for garnish
- 2 - 3 Star Anise
- 2 - 4 tablespoons Maple Syrup or honey
- Orange Slices optional garnish
Mix the ingredients. In a large saucepan, stir together all the ingredients.
Simmer. Warm the wine just shy of a simmer over medium-high heat, being careful to avoid boiling (alcohol begins to evaporate at 172°F). Reduce the heat to low, cover tightly, and let the wine gently simmer for at least 15 minutes or up to 3 hours.
Strain. Use a fine mesh strainer to remove and discard the orange slices, cloves, cinnamon sticks, and star anise. Taste the mulled wine and adjust the sweetness to your liking by adding more sweetener if necessary. Serve. Ladle into heatproof mugs, and garnish with toppings such as orange slices and cinnamon sticks before serving while warm.
- Use white wine. You can also enjoy the deliciousness and charm of this recipe when prepared with a dry white wine.
- Make slow cooker mulled wine. Feel free to experiment with a slow cooker on its low setting for mulled wine. However, be cautious, as slow cookers can vary in their interpretation of "low" heat. Keep watch to prevent unintentional overheating and simmering.
