Instant Pot Country Style Ribs are tender and flavorful thanks to a homemade marinade. Best of all, they’re quick and easy!
This wouldn’t be a Southern cuisine blog without some quality rib recipes. I’ve already shared my oven-baked ribs — which go wonderfully with these smoked baked beans from scratch and my famous sweet coleslaw. And today, I want to talk about country style ribs in the Instant Pot.
Why This Recipe Works
If you’ve never tasted country style ribs, you’re in for a treat. Spoiler alert: they aren’t what you may think they are! They actually aren’t a portion of ribs, rather they are made with cuts of shoulder pork.
One thing is for sure — they are mighty tasty! Tender, juicy, and bursting with flavor, I really enjoy making mine in the Instant Pot. The key is in the homemade marinade featuring Worcestershire sauce, brown sugar, and apple cider vinegar.
Instant Pot country style ribs are cooked in the IP, then broiled in the oven, and done in under 30 minutes. You will have to be a little patient as the marinade works its magic — but it’s so worth it!
Ingredients Needed
- Country Style Ribs: Again, your country style ribs in the Instant Pot are made with a cut of pork shoulder, not ribs. That’s why it’s essential that you look for “country style ribs” at the supermarket or the butcher.
- Worcestershire Sauce: This complex condiment boasts sweet, tangy, sour, and salty flavors. It’s the star of your marinade, for sure.
- Brown Sugar: Adding a bit of sweetness to the marinade goes a long way. Paired with the other ingredients, brown sugar enhances the pork’s natural flavors.
- Barbecue Sauce: It wouldn’t be a country style pork ribs in the Instant Pot recipe without a classic: barbecue sauce!
How to Make Instant Pot Country Style Ribs
- Prep your marinade. Add the apple cider vinegar, beef broth, garlic powder, onion powder, salt, Worcestershire sauce, brown sugar, and black pepper to a small bowl and whisk to combine.
- Marinate the meat. Place the ribs in a shallow dish and pour your marinade on top. Cover and place in the fridge for 30 minutes to an hour. Don’t leave it for longer — the vinegar tenderizes the meat.
- Cook. Transfer the ribs and marinade to your Instant Pot and secure the lid on top. Set the valve to the “sealing” position and press the “manual” cook button. Set the timer to 14 minutes.
- Release the pressure. When your country style pork ribs in the Instant Pot are done cooking, turn the valve to the release position and allow it to release for 10 minutes. Carefully remove the lid when it’s done.
- Coat the ribs in barbecue sauce. Place the cooked ribs on a baking sheet and brush the barbecue sauce all over.
- Broil. Set your oven to broil and place the baking sheet in the oven for a few minutes so the ribs crisp up, then dig in!
Storage and or Freezing Instructions
- Make-ahead instructions: You can make your ribs up to 3 days before serving. Simply follow the instructions above until Step 4, then place the ribs in an airtight container and store them in the fridge. Before serving, place them on the baking sheet with the BBQ sauce and broil as instructed.
- Freezing instructions: I recommend vacuum sealing your completely cooled ribs before placing them in the freezer. When stored properly they will keep for up to 3 months. Allow them to thaw in the fridge before reheating them in your oven.
- Storage instructions: Place any leftover ribs in an airtight container in the fridge. They will keep for 3-4 days.
Recipe Notes and Tips
- Don’t skip the BBQ sauce. Slathering your ribs before broiling them will ensure that they don’t dry out.
- Trim the fat. If you buy a particularly fatty cut of meat, be sure to trim it before marinating.
- Use bone-in or boneless. Both cuts of meat will work for country style ribs in the Instant Pot. Use whatever you can find!
FAQS
One of the reasons why I love making country style pork ribs in the Instant Pot is that this cooking method pretty much guarantees they’ll end up perfectly juicy! And, remember not to skip out on the barbecue sauce before broiling. The extra layer will lock the moisture in.
It’s all about how long you cook them. The meat can become tough if you don’t allow them to cook long enough. I find that 14 minutes in the Instant Pot and then a few minutes under the broiler is perfect!
