Harry and his friends most notably drank Butterbeer but another wizarding favorite in the wizarding world is pumpkin juice. Made with real pumpkin, apple cider, and fall spices this Harry Potter Pumpkin Juice is one everyone will enjoy.
Harry Potter will always be one of my favorite series of all time and this food is just as magical as the books. It’s why I love to make Pumpkin Pasties or a Harry Potter Birthday Cake anytime I’m reading the Harry Potter books or watching the movies.
Why This Recipe Works
This fun and festive Harry Potter-inspired beverage can be made in minutes and is a delicious treat for kids. They can even help you prepare the juice.
If you’re planning a Halloween party, fall gathering, or even for Thanksgiving this juice is one everyone will love. It’s best served chilled, but you can also heat it for a steaming heart-warming treat.
It’s the perfect party punch. With only 5 ingredients you can have it made quickly and it can also be made ahead of when you plan on serving it.
This beverage was made famous by the Harry Potter series and appears in every book as a drink of choice with the exception of year one. Harry and his classmates are well known to drink this during meal times in the Great Hall as well as wash down Pumpkin Pasties with some on the Hogwarts Express.
Ingredients
Ingredients Needed
- Pumpkin Purée: for this recipe, you will need pumpkin purée, not pumpkin pie mix. The pie mix will already be sweetened and have spices so it would make the juice too sweet if used.
- Pumpkin Pie Spice: I often keep some homemade Pumpkin Pie Spice in my pantry, but the store-bought kind is perfect for this recipe. If you’re out and or can’t find any at the store you can also use this guide to find a Pumpkin Pie Substitute.
- Vanilla: I prefer to use vanilla extract for this recipe, but you can also use rum extract or almond extract.
- Brown Sugar: adding brown sugar is optional since the apple cider is already sweet but I think it adds a nice flavor that makes this juice a treat. You can also swap the brown sugar for maple syrup or honey if you would prefer not to use refined sugar.
There are some recipe mixtures that includ apricot or peach nector as a nice addition. I prefer to keep this recipe simple, but you can also add this to your juice.
Step-by-Step Instructions
- Mix the ingredients. Place the apple cider, pumpkin puree, brown sugar, pumpkin pie spice, and vanilla extract into a blender or into a large pitcher.
- Heat. Pour the mixture into a large pot and heat over medium heat until the sugar had dissolved completely. Allow it to cool completely and chill it in the fridge for at least 30 minutes before serving (unless serving it hot). Before serving give the mixture a good stir.
Make Ahead Instructions
You can easily prepare this juice the night before you plan on serving it. If you choose to do this I recommend blending the mixture in a blender instead of stirring it together. Then before you plan on serving it give the mixture a good stir.
Storage and Freezing Information
- Storage: Any leftovers can be kept in a pitcher with a lid or covered and stored in the fridge for up to 1 week.
- How to freeze: Pour the mixture into a freezer-safe zip-top bag and place it in the freezer. It will last for 3 months in the freezer. Allow it to thaw overnight in the fridge before you plan on serving it.
Recipe Notes and Tips
- Before serving this juice give the mixture a good stir. This will mix the spices and pumpkin that start to separate after sitting for too long.
- Make your own Pumpkin Pie Spice. Blend 1 tablespoon cinnamon, 1 teaspoon ginger, 1 teaspoon nutmeg, 1/2 teaspoon ground allspice, and 1/2 teaspoon ground cloves.
- Heating the pumpkin mixture is an important step. It dissolves the sugar and also keeps the ingredients from separating after it has cooled.
- Serve hot. Pumpkin juice doesn’t have to be chilled. It can also be served in a steaming mug to keep you warm on those cold winter nights.
- You can use both apple cider and apple juice for this recipe. Apple cider has a bolder fall flavor than apple juice, which is why I prefer to use it instead.
- Try some other Harry Potter recipes. Another kid-friendly favorite is Gillywater and Frozen Butterbeer!
FAQs
Pumpkin juice is like a thicker juice with an apple cider taste combined with seasonal spices of cinnamon, nutmeg, ginger, allspice, and clove. It’s a mild but comforting flavor.
I think this question is better answered by J.K. Rowling herself but it was a common drink served in the Great Hall of Hogwarts as well as on the Hogwarts Express. Perhaps it’s just a drink the wizarding community prefers.
There are so many occasions on which you can serve this juice but Halloween and during a Harry Potter watch party are two of my favorites. It’s a non-alcoholic drink so it’s great for kids and works well during Thanksgiving too. You can even serve it for class parties.
