This Eggnog Milkshake is the creamiest, most indulgent frozen holiday beverage to sip. Made with silky smooth eggnog (store-bought or homemade), vanilla ice cream, and you can even mix in your favorite alcohol to make it a boozy shake. Takes only 10 minutes to whip one up!

Two eggnog milkshakes in glasses topped with whipped cream and cherries.

This delicious frosty and creamy winter beverage is what holiday dreams are made of whether you’re whipping one up for kids or making it a boozy milkshake for adults. You can make this as indulgent as you want by opting for a quick version and using store-bought eggnog or making your own Homemade Eggnog.

    Why This Recipe Works

    • Extremely easy to prepare. This eggnog shake makes for a fun dessert that’s easy to make at home. While your weather outside may be frightful and extremely chilly, this beverage is completely delightful. I recommend making it and sitting fireside.
    • Only 5 ingredients. There are only 5 ingredients in this recipe and you can even turn it into a boozy adult beverage by adding some rum or vodka.
    • Better than the McDonalds eggnog shake. Versions of this frosty beverage pop up all around town during the holidays, but the best one out there is the one you make at home.

Even though it may be cold out you can still sip chilly dessert drinks like this one or maybe even leave one for Santa instead of milk. I hear it also likes this Oreo Milkshake Recipe. I personally can never get enough eggnog desserts, which is why I recommend trying this Eggnog Pie Recipe next.

    Ingredients Needed

Eggnog milkshake ingredients in various bowls.
    • Ice Cream: I prefer to use vanilla ice cream for this recipe, which keeps the flavor of the eggnog pure, however, you can use your favorite ice cream. Some other delicious options would be rum raisin, peppermint, or even chocolate.
    • Rum Extract: adding in some rum extract really enhances the overall flavor of this milkshake, but you can also use almond extract as well.
    • Whipped Topping: you can use Cool Whip or even prepare your own homemade whipped cream to mix in and I recommend adding some additional whipped topping to top off the milkshake.

    Recipe Variations

    • Cookie Crumbs: place ¼ cup of Oreos in the mixer and then crush some to sprinkle on top for added crunch.
    • Chocolate Drizzle: before pouring the milkshake into your glass drizzle some chocolate syrup into the glass. Then drizzle it on top too.
    • Peppermint: add in ½ teaspoon of peppermint extract for a delicious candy candy-like flavor perfect for the holiday season.

How to Make an Eggnog Milkshake

    Eggnog milkshake process step 1.
    • Blend all the ingredients. Place the vanilla ice cream, eggnog, whipped topping, vanilla extract, and rum extract in a blender and blend until smooth.
    • Add toppings. Top your milkshake with additional whipped topping, cherries, and anything else you’d like.

    Toppings

You can go simple or absolutely outrageous with your eggnog shake toppings. Some of my favorite options are below. I tend to fall right in the middle. Not too plain, but not too crazy,

    • Nutmeg
    • Shaved White Chocolate
    • Crushed Candy Canes
    • Christmas Sprinkles
    • Chocolate Chip Cookies

    Recipe Notes and Tips:

    • Start with the recommended amount of milk and if it’s too thick add more, and if the milkshake is too thin add more ice cream. It’s easier to make the shake thinner than thicker though.
    • For some added flavor I recommend mixing in ¼ teaspoon of nutmeg.
    • To make an extra cold milkshake place the top portion of the blender or the blended shake in the freezer for about 15 minutes.
    • Make it a boozy shake. To make this a boozy milkshake the best alcohol options to add are dark rum, bourbon, whiskey, or brandy. Mix in 2 ounces of your favorite alcohol for a festive frosty beverage.

    FAQs

How do you thicken a milkshake?

To thicken your milkshake add more ice cream and keep the ice cream in the freezer until you’re ready to add it to the blender. If you like yours super thick then you can cut down on the eggnog too.

How long should you blend a milkshake?

Approximately, 1 minute is time enough to blend the ingredients smoothly but maintain the thickness of the shake.
