This sinister punch is perfect for Halloween parties or for wizards looking to turn themselves into someone else. Polyjuice Potion is a well-known substance used for disguising oneself in the wizarding world of Harry Potter. This sparkling sweet and tart punch is both delicious and fun.
Harry Potter will always be one of my favorite book series and the food alone is magical. I love to make recipes such as Pumpkin Pasties and Pumpkin Juice when Halloween rolls around.
Why This Recipe Works
This peculiar potion plays a pivotal role in the Harry Potter series and while you do have to be a wizard to brew the true potion, this version of polyjuice potion can be made at home. It’s perfect for a Halloween or even a Harry Potter watch party.
Kids will love it and because it’s sweet, frothy, and topped with whipped cream adults will enjoy sipping it as well. With only 5 ingredients it’s extremely easy to make and kids can help prepare it.
While you won’t turn into someone else while drinking this beverage, you also won’t need a piece of anyone, such as hair, either. It is delicious though and one that will make for a festive party, especially if it’s a Harry Potter-themed party.
Ingredients Needed
Ingredient Notes
- Lime Sherbet: both lime sherbet and rainbow sherbet will work for this recipe, but if you want the potion to be extra green then I recommend using lime flavor.
- Ginger Ale: the ale combined with the soda adds a delicious fizz and mellows the sweetness of the punch.
- Sprite: this is a great caffeine-free soda that adds to the overall flavor of the punch. You can also use lemon or lime sparkling water.
- Green Food Coloring: if you use lime sherbet then it’s not necessary to use green food coloring, but if you want a brilliant green color then I recommend using a neon green color.
- Whipped Cream: this makes for a delicious topping to the polyjuice potion and I highly recommend topping your beverage off with some.
Step-by-Step Instructions
- Add the sherbet. Scoop the sherbet into a large punch bowl or drink dispenser, working quickly as it will melt.
- Pour in the sodas. Pour the Sprite and Ginger on top of the sherbet.
- Color the punch. If using, add the green food coloring and gently stir the punch to mix it in.
- Top it off. Top each glass individually with whipped cream or Cool Whip.
Serving Suggestions
- Make it into shots. You can do this for kids so they have just a small sip, similar to in the Harry Potter movies and books, or you can add alcohol and make it an adult shot.
- Give it some extra bubbles. Place a ½ teaspoon of baking soda and ½ teaspoon of vinegar in the bottom of each glass before adding the potion. This will cause the drink to bubble over the glass, which kids will absolutely love.
- Serve it in potion glasses. This is just a fun option if you plan on having a party. You can also serve it in these adorable polyjuice potion shot glasses.
Recipe Notes and Tips
- Turn this into an adult beverage. This doesn’t have to be a beverage for kids. You can easily add some alcohol to really get the effects of the potion. Some great options are rum, vodka, especially flavored ones such as lime, and tequila.
- If you’d really like to have some fun with this drink you can add some dry ice to your punch bowl. If you’re serving this to kids I don’t recommend placing any in their drink cup because dry ice isn’t to be swallowed. You’ll also want to be the one handling it since it requires the use of gloves and tongs.
- For serving this punch at a party I recommend placing it in a beverage dispenser. If you choose to do this don’t add the whipped cream because it will cause the dispenser to get clogged. Just add it after you’ve poured your drink. I love this skeleton drink dispenser and this skull and crossbones dispenser.
- This beverage is best served cold, so chill the ingredients before using them. The sherbet will be coming from the freezer, but keep your Sprite and Ginger Ale in the fridge before adding it to the punch.
Actual Polyjuice Potion Ingredients
For those true Harry Potter fans, the real ingredients for brewing an actual polyjuice potion recipe are below. In the book it’s described as a “thick, glutinous liquid” and “like thick, dark mud, bubbling sluggishly.” It may require wizarding abilities however for full effects to take place.
- Lacewing flies (stewed for 21 days)
- Shredded Boomslang skin
- Leeches
- Knotgrass
- Powdered bicorn horn
- Fluxweed (pick at the full moon)
- A bit of the person one wants to turn into (usually hair, which is probably the easiest to acquire)
FAQs
This potion was first brewed by Hermoine Granger in Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets which allowed Harry and Ron to assume the form of Crabbe and Goyle. This homemade version is a fun party punch for everyone, muggles included, to enjoy.
This punch can’t be prepared ahead because it won’t be as frothy if you do. It’s best prepared just before you plan on serving it.
Just like the effects of the true polyjuice potion, which wear off after an hour, this punch will not last for much longer than your party. Any leftovers should be discarded.
