Unlock the secret wizarding world of magical transformation with this Polyjuice Potion recipe! Dive into the enchanting art of wizardry as you brew this elixir of disguise. This sparkling sweet and tart punch is both delicious and fun.
What is Polyjuice Potion in Harry Potter?
Polyjuice Potion is a magical concoction in the Harry Potter series that allows a person to assume the physical appearance of someone else. It requires a complex brewing process and a piece of the person’s hair or another body part to complete the transformation.
When consumed, the drinker takes on the likeness of the individual whose hair was added to the potion, enabling them to masquerade as that person for a limited time. In the book, it’s described as a “thick, glutinous liquid” and “like thick, dark mud, bubbling sluggishly.”
The actual ingredients as mentioned in the books are listed below, however, my Muggle version can be prepared without these ingredients or magical abilities.
- Lacewing flies (stewed for 21 days)
- Shredded Boomslang skin
- Leeches
- Knotgrass
- Powdered bicorn horn
- Fluxweed (pick at the full moon)
- A bit of the person one wants to turn into (usually hair, which is probably the easiest to acquire)
Ingredients Needed
- Lime Sherbet: Lime sherbet and rainbow sherbet will work for this recipe, but if you want the potion to be extra green then I recommend using lime flavor.
- Ginger Ale: The ginger ale combined with the soda adds a delicious fizz and mellows the sweetness of the punch.
- Sprite: This is a great caffeine-free soda that adds to the overall flavor of the punch. You can also use lemon or lime sparkling water.
- Green Food Coloring: If you use lime sherbet then it’s not necessary to use green food coloring, but if you want a brilliant green color then I recommend using a neon green color.
- Whipped Cream: Whipped Cream makes for a delicious topping to the Polyjuice Potion and I highly recommend topping your beverage off with some.
How to Make Polyjuice Potion
While this Polyjuice Potion recipe isn’t as authentic as the original potion I highly recommend trying some of my Harry Potter recipes that are such as Butterbeer, Pumpkin Juice, and these savory Pumpkin Pasties.
- Add the sherbet. Scoop the sherbet into a large punch bowl or drink dispenser, working quickly as it will melt.
- Pour in the sodas. Pour the Sprite and Ginger on top of the sherbet.
- Color the punch. If using, add the green food coloring and gently stir the punch to mix it in.
- Top it off. Top each glass individually with a Whipped Cream or Cool Whip. You can also add some dry ice to the bottom of your glass for some extra fizz and smoke (just follow dry ice safety guidelines).
Recipe Notes and Tips
- Make it alcoholic. You can easily add some alcohol to really get the effects of the potion. Some great options are rum, and vodka, especially flavored ones such as lime, and tequila.
- If you’d really like to have some fun with this drink you can add some dry ice. If you’re serving this to kids I don’t recommend placing any in their drink cup because dry ice isn’t to be swallowed. You’ll also want to be the one handling it since it requires the use of gloves and tongs.
- Give it some extra bubbles. Place a 1/2 teaspoon of baking soda and 1/2 teaspoon of vinegar in the bottom of each glass before adding the potion. This will cause the drink to bubble over the glass, which kids will absolutely love.
- This beverage is best served cold. Chill the ingredients before using them. The sherbet will be coming from the freezer, but keep your Sprite and Ginger Ale in the fridge before adding it to the punch.
- Make it into shots. You can do this for kids so they have just a small sip, similar to in the Harry Potter movies and books, or you can add alcohol and make it an adult shot.
- Serve it in potion glasses. This is just a fun option if you plan on having a party. You can also serve it in these adorable polyjuice potion shot glasses.
FAQs
This potion was first brewed by Hermoine Granger in Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets which allowed Harry and Ron to assume the form of Crabbe and Goyle. This homemade version is a fun party punch for everyone, muggles included, to enjoy.
This delightful punch is best enjoyed at the peak of its frothy goodness, and to achieve that, it’s ideal to prepare it just before you intend to serve it. Preparing it ahead may compromise its frothiness, so savor the freshest experience by making it right on the spot.
Similar to the true effects of the authentic Polyjuice Potion, which fade after an hour, this punch is not meant to outlast your party. Any remaining remnants should be gracefully bid farewell and disposed of.
