Why is it called Tokyo Tea?

Tokyo Tea derives its name from the vibrant city of Tokyo, Japan. The cocktail captures the essence of Tokyo’s bustling nightlife and vibrant energy. Just like the city itself, Tokyo Tea is a lively and electrifying drink that combines multiple spirits, including vodka, rum, gin, and tequila, with a splash of melon liqueur and citrus.

The combination of these ingredients creates a vibrant green color, which mainly comes from the Midori, reminiscent of traditional Japanese tea, and not to be confused with the Green Tea Shot. Despite its name, Tokyo Tea does not contain any tea but pays homage to Tokyo’s spirit and excitement, offering a unique and invigorating taste experience.

Ingredients Needed

Tokyo Tea ingredients.
  • Melon Liqueur – Melon liqueur is a vibrant and sweet liqueur with a distinct melon flavor. It’s responsible for the green hue. My preference is to use Midori with it’s growing popularity in other Midori Cocktails.
  • Sweet and Sour Mix – I recommend making your own Sour Mix because it offers freshness, customization, and quality ingredients for your cocktails. Store-bought is just fine, but if you can opt for homemade.
  • Triple Sec – Triple Sec in the Tokyo Tea drink adds a sweet citrus note, enhancing the overall flavor and balance of the cocktail.
  • Spirits – The Tokyo Iced Tea cocktail harmoniously combines gin, rum, tequila, and vodka for a captivating blend of flavors.
  • Soda Water – To complete the cocktail, it is customary to top off the beverage with a splash of soda water.

FAQS

What’s the difference between Long Island Iced Tea and Tokyo Tea?

Long Island Iced Tea and Tokyo Tea are two beloved cocktails, each with its distinct characteristics. Long Island Iced Tea combines vodka, rum, tequila, gin, and triple sec, creating a well-balanced and slightly sweet flavor profile. Its traditional recipe includes cola, resulting in a brownish appearance.

Tokyo Tea, on the other hand, swaps out the cola for Midori, a melon liqueur, giving it a unique twist. This addition brings a pronounced melon flavor to the cocktail, setting it apart from the Long Island Iced Tea. Tokyo Tea boasts a vibrant green color due to the inclusion of Midori and lacks the cola element.

Can I order Tokyo Tea in a Bar?

The availability of the Tokyo Tea cocktail may vary from bar to bar. It is not as widely recognized as some other classic cocktails, but many bars with a diverse drink menu and skilled bartenders may be able to prepare it for you.

What is a Tokyo Tea?

Tokyo Tea is a cocktail known for its vibrant and refreshing qualities. It is a variation of the Long Island Iced Tea that replaces the cola component with Midori, a melon liqueur. The typical recipe for a Tokyo Tea includes a mix of spirits such as vodka, rum, tequila, gin, and triple sec, along with the addition of Midori for a pronounced melon flavor. The combination of these ingredients creates a bright green drink that captures the essence of Tokyo’s nightlife.

Recipe Notes and Tips

  • You can change the melon liqueur. Midori is the most commonly used melon liqueur, especially in drinks such as The Japanese Slipper or the Scooby Snack Shot, however, you can explore other melon liqueur options as well. Experimenting with different brands can offer slight variations in taste, so feel free to choose one that suits your preferences.
  • Make your own Homemade Sour Mix: Consider making your own sour mix. This allows you to control the tartness and sweetness levels, resulting in a more customized and flavorful cocktail.
  • Get creative with your garnish. Enhance the visual appeal of your Tokyo Iced Tea by garnishing it creatively. Lemon twists, lime wedges, cucumber ribbons, or even a sprig of fresh mint can add a vibrant touch to the presentation of the drink.
