Black Lemonade

Discover the captivating allure of Black Lemonade, a mesmerizing concoction that’s as dark as midnight and as refreshing as a summer breeze. Crafted with the enigmatic touch of activated charcoal, this drink is an artistic tangy, sparkling masterpiece for your taste buds.

There’s something fun and alluring about black cocktails like the Full Moon Cocktail, but when Halloween rolled around my kids requested a “black” drink. I took their favorite lemonade, but could have easily used Fruit Punch too.

What I Love About This Recipe

  • Ideal for Themed Events: Perfect for Halloween parties and pairs perfectly with Halloween Recipes, birthday parties, or any occasion where a dramatic presentation is desired.
  • Fun for Kids: Children will be fascinated by the unconventional appearance and may be more willing to try this unique lemonade. Serve it with these Jack O Lantern Quesadillas.
  • Refreshing Citrus Zing: The citrusy flavor of lemonade provides a delightful and tangy contrast to the dark appearance. This version is also made using soda water for a bubbly flavor and look.

How to Make Black Lemonade

Adding soda water to the glass of black lemonade.
  1. Mix the ingredients. Pour the freshly squeezed lemon juice, Simple Syrup, and activated charcoal into your glass or pitcher (for larger batches) and gently stir to blend them together seamlessly.
  2. Top it off. Place a generous amount of ice into the glass and then carefully fill it to the brim with soda water.

Disclaimer: Activated charcoal has culinary and aesthetic applications, but consult a healthcare professional for guidance if you have health conditions or are taking medications, as it may interact with them.

Recipe Variations

  • Use black glitter. If you’d like to skip the activated charcoal you can use black edible glitter instead to achieve a similar effect that also sparkles.
  • Make a pitcher. Use the following amounts to make a pitcher of black lemonade: 6 cups lemon juice, 3/4 cup simple syrup, 2 tablespoons of activated charcoal, and 6 to 8 cups of soda water.
  • Turn it into a cocktail. You can easily add your favorite alcohol to this beverage or you could try some of my other black drinks such as the Black Margarita or the Black Widow Halloween Cocktail.
